Public Health Nursing

While most nurses look after one patient at a time, public health nurses look after entire populations. By working with entire communities, public health nurses can educate people about health issues, improve community health and safety, and increase access to care. Public health nurses believe that a person's health is affected by many factors, including genetic makeup, lifestyle, and environment. Instead of expecting patients to return to the hospital with illness, they are going to communities to undertake to assist people improve their health and stop illness. For people who do not have access to care, public health nurses can also provide direct health care services, including preventive care, screening services and health education.
